Home Improvement: Upholstering Dining Chairs and Memories with Grandma

Today’s post is not an earth shatteringly great project.

Just google “DIY Upholstery” and you will find tons of bloggers have posts with tips and instructions.

But we reupholstered our dining chairs two weeks ago, and during the process I became very nostalgic.

You see, the chairs we reupholstered are not some thrift store find or closetout deal at Home Goods.

They were my grandmother’s chairs that also match the China cabinet and table she gave me.

My mother, aunt and uncle grew up eating at that table, in those chairs and had their dishes kept in that cabinet.

My grandmother served her grandchildren many many tea parties at that table.

We ate extended family dinners sitting in those chairs.

She served us her Ebelskiver cakes(that her Danish grandmother used to make for her) while sitting in those chairs.

The table, chairs, and china cabinet are not fancy.

Kind of a stream-lined modern ladder back and mid-century design.

But I will use them until they fall apart because as a teen she worked for years to save up to purchase them.

And they moved from PA, to GA and then to SC.

And they have survived.

Survived with grace.

Much like my grandmother.
