Home Improvement: Yucky Exterior Lights

Updating Exterior Fixtures for FREE

We had yucky old exterior lights on our back deck and patio.

And as much as I like the fixture we purchased for our front door, I was determined to fix this backyard problem without spending mucho dinero.

So Saturday I grabbed a roll of Frog Tape, some wrapping paper, and leftover semi-gloss spray paint with primer built-in I found in the garage.

And I got to work.

First, I wiped down the whole fixture with a wet paper towel to remove any dirt and spider webs.

I removed the bulb, top of the fixture and the glass inserts to clean and polish (since they had not been cleaned in probably 15 yrs!)

And then I taped around the fixture base to make sure that NO PAINT would get on the siding.

I added the Kraft wrapping paper (any wrapping paper or even a garbage bag would work) around the fixture to take care of all the over-spray.

I applied one coat of spray paint with primer built in.

And then I let it dry for about 30 minutes.

While the paint dried I cleaned the glass inserts and painted the top piece to the fixture, as well as all the little screw heads.

And then I simply but all the pieces back together.

Completing this process on two exterior lights took 1 hr and 15 minutes. That’s it!

And cost me $0 dollars because I had all the supplies on hand.

Yay for free DIY!
